New luxury housing developments and the sale of social housing have significantly changed the population of Amsterdam North, creating growing contrasts within the district. Tuindorp Nieuwendam, however, has largely remained unchanged because of its protected cityscape status. At first glance little seems different, yet behind the facades a social shift is clearly taking place: the traditional “Noorderling” is gradually making way for a new generation of residents.

What does this mean for the residents of Tuindorp Nieuwendam? How do they experience these changes, and will they be able to continue living here? Over the course of three years, I photographed and spoke with 75 residents. The project resulted in a book, and large-format prints from the series traveled through Amsterdam for eight months as an outdoor exhibition. In the documentary of the same name, ten residents share their stories. At the EYE Filmmuseum, the book, exhibition and documentary came together.
